Now that fall is officially here, more and more riders will be out on the road to enjoy the cooler weather. That means an increased chance for a crash involving a motorcycle for people who drive cars, and an increased chance at a serious injury for the riders themselves. Nothing caps this point more than the tragic news of two separate motorcycle accidents in Nashville which occurred mere hours from each other.
According to The Tennessean, “The first [motorcycle accident] was reported at 1:37 a.m., Wednesday on Donelson Pike near BNA Drive near Nashville International Airport, according to Metro’s emergency communications department. Another was reported around 3:30 a.m. at Interstate-24 westbound near Ellington Parkway. The crash blocked the off-ramp for several hours.”
As of now, the news is reporting that both accidents had fatalities, but there is no information about whether more than two people have died.
Staying safe while on the road
Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, and we pray that their families will have the information they need and the answers they seek soon. As riders ourselves, we know firsthand what kinds of dangers await us out on the road, even when conditions seem to clear and smooth. We urge every motorcycle rider in Knoxville to please:
- Drive within the speed limits at all times.
- Pay close attention to the road; avoid using your cell phone or any other electronic device while riding.
- Be aware of other cars around you, especially because they may not see you at all.
- Check the weather report before riding. An unexpected storm can make the roads slick and litter them with debris.
- Slow down around curves and through intersections when visibility is limited.
- Use appropriate signals – either on your bike or with your hands – when you’re making a turn.
- Wear protective gear like helmets and jackets. Consider wearing more reflective material to increase your visibility to other drivers.
- Use your headlights once dusk sets in, and make sure that your brakes and brake lights are in working condition.
Whatever you do, don’t drive when you’re drowsy or if you’ve had anything to drink. Even under ideal conditions, a drowsy or drunk motorcycle rider will not have the necessary reaction time to avoid potential hazards.
